The signals you can see
- Date of the last post and last story highlight
- Whether tagged photos are still being added by other people
- Comments and likes that are recent
- A link in bio that is live or dead
- Whether the profile is public, private or restricted
What each signal tells you
A last post three years ago with no tagged activity suggests little use. A private account with no posts tells you nothing at all, because the owner may be posting to a small audience.
When the profile cannot be found
‘User not found’ has several meanings. The account may be deleted, deactivated, or the owner may have blocked you. If you try the link while logged out and logged in on a second account, you can tell some of these apart, but never all.
A sensible rule
Treat a handle as possibly inactive only if the account has been quiet for years, nobody tags it, and the details no longer match a real person or business. Even then, you are describing a feeling, not a status Instagram will act on.
What to do with the result
If the handle looks active, leave it alone. If it looks abandoned, ask whether an official route fits: see which handles can be claimed. Do not message the holder with offers.
Quick checklist
- Open the profile logged out and logged in.
- Note the last post date and the tagged tab.
- Search the handle with the person’s name and business name.
- Look for a matching business registration or website.
- Decide which official route, if any, fits.
