Start with the principle
Instagram usernames are unique. Only one account can hold a handle, and Instagram will not take a handle from an account that follows its rules just because someone else wants it more.
That is why guides promising a trick are wrong. The handle only becomes available when the current holder changes it, deletes the account, or the account is removed for a reason Instagram accepts.
Route 1: impersonation
If an account uses your name, photos or identity to pass as you, Instagram’s impersonation report applies. You will usually need to show who you are with ID or equivalent proof.
Impersonation needs the account to be pretending to be you. A stranger who happens to share your name does not qualify.
Route 2: intellectual property
If the handle matches a trademark you own or are authorised to enforce, the intellectual property report is the relevant form. Have the registration number, the jurisdiction and the goods or services covered ready.
A pending application is weaker than a registration, and a mark in an unrelated class may not help.
Route 3: Community Standards
Accounts that scam, spam or harass can be reported under the Community Standards. If Instagram removes the account, the handle can later become available. That is a separate event from you obtaining it, and no outcome is certain.
Route 4: your own history
If the handle was yours, the questions are different. Was the account hacked, deleted or renamed? Instagram explains how a previous username can be reused and, in many situations, a recent change can be reverted. Check that page first.
What does not work
- Offering the holder money, which Instagram’s terms discourage and scammers exploit
- Reporting the account many times from many profiles
- Impersonating the holder yourself
- Using a service that claims to know someone at Instagram
After a route succeeds
When a handle is freed, you set it yourself in Settings, as described in Instagram’s change username guide. Move quickly, because anyone can take a free handle.
