The usual pattern
It starts in your DMs or a comment from a profile that offers to ‘release’ a handle. The offer sounds specific: a name, a price, a time. Then a deposit is requested, then a second fee, then silence.
Red flags
- A request for your password, a code or access to your email
- A promised exact result, such as ‘your handle by Friday’
- A claimed contact inside Meta
- Payment first, with no description of the route
- Pressure to move to another app
- An offer to swap you onto a different account
What a real service looks like
It explains which official process applies, what evidence it needs and what it cannot do. It says Instagram decides. It has a clear refund rule. It never asks to log in.
Check before you pay
- Ask which official route will be used.
- Ask whether any login details are needed. The answer should be no.
- Ask what happens if the claim fails.
- Search the wording they send you. Scams reuse scripts.
If you were caught
Change the password on your Instagram account and on the email attached to it, log out other devices, turn on two-factor authentication, and report the scammer’s profile through Instagram’s help centre.
