Strong situations
A registered mark, a clear impersonation, or a handle you held yourself and lost recently.
An inactive-looking profile is not a claimable one. This page sets out which situations have an official route and which do not.
A handle is realistically claimable when a specific official route matches the facts, not when the profile merely looks quiet. The route is what matters, not the posting history.
| Situation | Official route | Realistic outlook |
|---|---|---|
| The handle is your registered trademark | Intellectual property report | Clearest route. Needs proof of ownership. |
| Someone is posing as you | Impersonation report | Works when the account clearly copies you. |
| The account breaks the Community Standards | Policy report | Removal is possible. The handle is not handed to you. |
| It was your handle and you lost it | Account recovery, username reuse rules | Depends on how it was lost and how long ago. |
| The profile is just quiet | None | No route. We will say so. |
A registered mark, a clear impersonation, or a handle you held yourself and lost recently.
A generic word, a common first name, or a profile that is simply not posting.
Offers to buy the handle, or to swap it with an account you own.
Send the handle. You get a plain answer on whether a route exists before any price is discussed.

There is no official definition. A profile with no recent posts can still be an active account that is private, archived or checked every week.
Instagram does not publish a rule that allows it. Handles are released when the account is deleted, renamed or removed under a policy.
It can. A registered mark gives you access to Instagram’s intellectual property report, which is a stronger route than a general complaint.
Send the username on WhatsApp or email. You hear whether it looks workable, and the price is agreed before we start.
