After you file an Instagram handle request

Short answer: after a request is filed, Instagram usually sends a confirmation, may ask for more information, and later replies with its decision. There is no published timetable and no status page to check. The useful things to do while you wait are to keep a record, answer any follow-up from the right person, and leave the receiving account ready.

First reply: a confirmation

Most report forms send an automatic email or a reference after submission. Save it, with the date and the exact handle in question. It is the only proof that the request exists, and you will need it if the request is followed up.

Sometimes: a request for more information

Instagram may come back asking for something specific, such as a clearer copy of an ID for an impersonation report, or the registration details of a mark. Reply to that message only, from the address used in the report, with what was asked for and nothing extra. Long cover letters and unrelated screenshots do not help.

Then: a decision

What comes backWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Action taken on the reported accountInstagram found the report fits its rulesWatch the handle and be ready to set it on the receiving account straight away
No action, with a reasonThe facts did not fit that routeCheck whether a different route fits different facts, or choose a variation
No reply after a long waitNothing that can be read either wayDo not refile the same report. Keep the confirmation and the dates

Action on an account does not always mean the handle appears on yours. When a name is released, it goes to whoever sets it first, so the receiving account should be logged in and ready.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How long does Instagram take to reply to a handle request?

Instagram does not publish a timetable for these reports, and replies vary. No honest service can tell you a date in advance.

Should I file the same report again if I hear nothing?

No. Repeat filings for the same facts add nothing and can make the record harder to read. Answer any follow-up and keep your confirmation.

Instagram asked for more information. Who should reply?

The person or representative named in the original report, from the same email address, with exactly what was asked for.

What if Instagram refuses the request?

Read the reason if one is given. A refusal on one route does not always rule out another route with different facts. With Atclaim, a failed username claim is covered by the refund policy.
