I deleted my Instagram and now my old handle is not available

Short answer: Deleting an account does not free its name straight away. Instagram says deleted content is removed after 30 days and the full process can take up to 90. If you asked for deletion recently, logging back in during the first 30 days cancels it and keeps the name.

Do this now

  1. If it was within 30 days, log in to the old account to cancel deletion.
  2. If it was longer ago, try the handle in Edit profile on your new account.
  3. If it still says unavailable, check every week or two.
  4. If another profile holds it, someone saved it after it freed up.
