An Instagram handle that shows user not found

Short answer: Not found does not mean the handle is free. The profile may be deactivated, blocked from you, restricted or removed, and each has a different meaning for a claim.

What the page can mean

How to check more

  1. Open the handle on a logged-out browser and on another account.
  2. Try to register the name in the sign-up or username change screen. If Instagram says it is taken, it is held.
  3. Only an available result in the change screen means you can use it.

Why it matters

Deactivated profiles still hold their handle. A deleted one may release it, but Instagram does not give a time. See the deactivated account guide.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

If the change screen accepts the name, is it mine?

If you save it, yes. The platform decides at the moment you submit.

Why does a blocked profile show not found?

Blocking hides the profile from the blocked account.

Can I reserve a handle?

No. Instagram does not offer reservations.
