I changed my Instagram handle and someone took the old one

Short answer: Once another account saves your old username, Instagram's switch back option no longer works for you. It only helps while no one else holds the name. You can report the new holder only if it poses as you or uses your registered mark.

Do this now

  1. Try the old name in Edit profile anyway. If it saves, you are done.
  2. If it does not, search it and screenshot the account holding it.
  3. Check whether that account copies your photos, bio or brand.
  4. If it does, report it for impersonation.
  5. If not, pick a close variation and update your links.

What to write

"I changed my username from @[old] on [date]. The account now using @[old] copies my profile photo and bio and is messaging my followers. Links attached."
