Each route rests on a different fact
| Route | Fits when | Needs | Does not fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Previous username | The name was yours and nobody new has it | Your old profile history | Someone else holds it now |
| Impersonation report | A profile poses as you or your brand | Links showing who is copied | The profile only shares a name |
| Intellectual property report | A profile infringes your registered mark | Mark, owner and goods details | You have no rights in the name |
| Community Standards report | A profile breaks a published rule | The rule it breaks | The profile is just inactive |
Try the previous-username route first when it applies
It involves no claim against anyone. Instagram describes the conditions on the help page listed in sources.
The impersonation route is about identity, not names
It protects against profiles that pretend to be you. See the impersonation guide.
The intellectual property route needs a right you hold
A registered mark is the clearest. See the trademark guide.
A Community Standards report needs a real violation
An inactive profile is not a violation by itself. Reports without a rule behind them are not a route.
