A claim is a request for a handle
An Instagram username claim is a request that a handle held by another profile be made available to you. It goes through a process Instagram publishes, not through a private deal. The handle only changes hands when Instagram acts on it.
A claim is not a trade, a purchase or a recovery
- Not a purchase: handles are not sold on the platform.
- Not a swap: trading handles between accounts is outside the rules.
- Not recovery: recovery returns an account you already control. See claim versus recovery.
Four routes cover most claims
The routes are the impersonation report, the intellectual property report, a Community Standards report, and the previous-username route for a name that was once yours. Each has its own conditions. The routes comparison shows them in one table.
Instagram decides, not the person who files
Instagram can refuse a request without explaining every reason. A service cannot change that. This is why Atclaim agrees a price before work starts and refunds 100% if the username claim fails.
Where to go next
Check whether the handle is in use first with the inactive handle check. Then read the preparation checklist.
