My Instagram was disabled and someone took my handle

Short answer: A disabled account usually keeps its username while the decision or appeal is open, so first check whether the handle is really taken or just hidden. If a different profile shows it, appeal your own account first. A handle that moved to someone else does not come back through the appeal alone.

Do this now

  1. Search the handle from another account. A disabled account often shows as unavailable, not as a new profile.
  2. Use the appeal option on the disabled notice in the Instagram app.
  3. If a new profile holds the name, screenshot it with the date.
  4. If that profile poses as you, file an impersonation report.
  5. Use a close variation for now.

What to write

In the appeal, say only what is true: "This is my account. I use it for [what]. I believe it was disabled in error and I can confirm my identity." Leave the handle dispute out of the appeal.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Will the appeal restore my handle?

If your account comes back with the name still on it, yes. If someone else took it, no.

How do I know it is hidden, not taken?

A taken handle shows a live profile with a photo, posts or bio that are not yours.

What if the new owner poses as me?

Use the impersonation report. That route does not need a trademark.
