Evidence that suits a request from Hong Kong
For a request from Hong Kong the useful evidence is a mark on the Hong Kong Trade Marks Registry, a business registration that matches the name, or evidence that a profile is posing as you. The preparation checklist lists the rest: the exact handle, the profile it is for, and what ties the name to you.

Starting with Instagram in Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s Trade Marks Ordinance (Cap. 559) works on registration, and common-law passing off protects goodwill built on use. A registered Hong Kong mark, shown by its number, is the clearest paper for Instagram’s intellectual property form. A company or business registration shows a business exists under a name, but it is not a trade mark.
The four official routes are set out in the routes guide and compared on the routes comparison.
Facts to cite
- Trade marks: the Trade Marks Registry of the Intellectual Property Department.
- Personal data: the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data as the regulator.
- Consumer and advertising matters: the Consumer Council.
- Languages: Chinese and English.
- Currency for the price: Hong Kong dollar (HKD). The price is agreed in your chat or email before work starts.
These are reference points, not legal advice. A platform’s decision on a handle follows its own policy.
The other two platforms in Hong Kong
TikTok stopped operating in Hong Kong in July 2020, so a claim here focuses on Instagram and Snapchat. A TikTok handle can still matter for a Hong Kong business that reaches audiences elsewhere, and it goes through the TikTok trademark form with the mark’s registration number in the filing.
Handle limits for both are on the TikTok rules and Snapchat rules pages.
The order of work
- You send the handle you want and the profile it is for, on WhatsApp or email, and say you are in Hong Kong.
- We look at whether an official route fits the facts and tell you if it looks workable.
- The price is agreed in chat before any work starts.
- The request is filed with each platform’s process. The platform makes the final decision, and a claim that fails is covered by the refund policy.
