Claiming an @handle from France

Last updated

Short answer: a handle claim starts with Instagram and then follows to TikTok and Snapchat, and it runs the same way from France as from any other country. The local part is the evidence: a mark on the INPI or EU register, proof that the name is a personal name or trade name in use, or evidence that a profile is posing as you. Each platform decides its own requests.

The Instagram route from France

A mark registered with INPI, or an EU trade mark, is the clearest proof for Instagram’s intellectual property form. French criminal law has an offence of identity usurpation online, in article 226-4-1 of the Criminal Code, which is why impersonation of a named person is taken seriously in France, but it is a matter for the courts and the police. The platform still uses its own impersonation form.

The four official routes are set out in the routes guide and compared on the routes comparison.

Then TikTok and Snapchat

Accents are the practical point. A French brand name with an accent has to be claimed in its plain spelling on TikTok and Snapchat, and the filing should link the two. ARCOM is the Digital Services Act coordinator in France. That is a platform-duties role, and a username claim does not go through it.

Handle limits for both are on the TikTok rules and Snapchat rules pages.

Proof to gather before you write

For a request from France the useful evidence is a mark on the INPI or EU register, proof that the name is a personal name or trade name in use, or evidence that a profile is posing as you. The preparation checklist lists the rest: the exact handle, the profile it is for, and what ties the name to you.

Never send a password or a login code. Nobody who needs one is working through an official route. See claim scams.

Four steps from first message to filing

  1. You send the handle you want and the profile it is for, on WhatsApp or email, and say you are in France.
  2. We look at whether an official route fits the facts and tell you if it looks workable.
  3. The price is agreed in chat before any work starts.
  4. The request is filed with each platform’s process. The platform makes the final decision, and a claim that fails is covered by the refund policy.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does the French identity usurpation offence help me get a handle back?

It makes impersonation of a real person online a criminal matter, which is useful if someone is posing as you. It does not transfer a handle. A platform impersonation report is the quicker route to look at, and the police route is separate.

Can the same @handle be claimed on all three platforms from France?

Only where each platform accepts it and the facts fit a route on each one. The three platforms differ on length and characters, so read the comparison page before you choose.

What if the claim fails?

The platform’s decision is final for that request. A claim that fails is covered by the 100% refund policy, and the price is agreed before work starts. The failed claims guide explains what it means.
